My daily goal is to empower students to reach their highest level of proficiency in French. I establish high standards of behavior and academics and enable each of my students to achieve them. I treat all people with respect and compassion and hold my students responsible to do the same. It is my mission to instill in all students the belief that they are capable, and the desire to contribute to their world.
I want my students to believe that they are capable of communicating with people on other continents and that they have valuable contributions to make as a world citizen. Moreover, I want them to believe that they can do it in French. For success, they need to have essential skills: self-discipline, self-motivation, self-esteem and self-confidence. They need to respect or appreciate others’ ways of doing and saying things. They need to practice and experience miscommunication in order to appreciate the need for accuracy. I believe that correction should be made with dignity, even humor.
Students need to buy into their worthiness and the worthiness of the task at hand. They need a safe and fun place to try. And they need a compassionate, perseverant coach, who will not give up on them, no matter what.
For me, that is the key to proficiency, even fluency.
I think all students are entitled to all of the above. It is what I do everyday. And I love what I do.
